What Are PTFE Based Lubricants?

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is a synthetic fluoropolymer that is used in some lubricants. PTFE based lubricants are known for their ability to lower energy consumption and wear on machinery by reducing friction.

What is a PTFE Dry Lube?

A dry lube is one that works in a solid-state rather than partially liquid-like grease or fully liquid-like oil. PTFE dry lubes dry quickly, keeping the lubricated track clean. Since they are dry, they don’t attract dirt, dust, or oil that can wear on machinery as a wet lubricant would.

What Are PTFE Based Lubricants Good For?

PTFE lubricants are great for things like installing faucet stems, cabinet drawers, and much more. They prevent rust and corrosion in addition to reducing friction and wear. PTFE based lubricants are food grade (U.S.D.A. rated H-1), non-toxic, biodegradable, and work in a wide range of temperatures (-65 degrees F to 500 degrees F). They are odorless and non-staining, they don’t melt, wash out, or dry out, and they are safe to use on wood, metal, plastic, and rubber.

Is there a difference between PTFE and Teflon?

There is no difference between PTFE and Teflon. Teflon is simply a trade name for the PTFE compound. It’s a flexible, non-stick material, and it’s resistant to electricity, chemicals, and thermal energy.
